BAF evolved in 1982 when Bruce A. Frye moved to Newcastle, Wyoming, the "Western Gateway to the Black Hills." All the materials used to create the knives are native to the Black Hills of South Dakota. BAF also uses deer, elk and antelope antler and bone. The woods used are cedar, sage brush, lilac oak and aspen. The metals used in the blades are old tool steel, files, planer blades and saw blades. The guard metals are antique silverware, brass and copper.
